United Against Violence – VoteCPAF.org

Here’s the latest PSA from a series of PSAs to come. You’ll spot me in this one… but me a YouTube All-Star? I don’t know about that. Regardless, it’s an honor being part of something so important.

What exactly are we doing here? We’re trying to win $1 million from Chase Community Giving so that the Center for the Pacific Asian Family can continue to do what they’ve been doing… and that’s helping women of Asian Pacific Islander descent who suffer from domestic violence and sexual assault. Fact: 40-60% of Americans of API descent experience intimate partner abuse or sexual abuse in their lifetime and that is wayyy too many. We need organizations like CPAF. To find out more info, go to: NurturingChange.org and VoteCPAF.org.

Vote for the Center for the Pacific Asian Family

The Center for the Pacific Asian Family (CPAF) is a Los Angeles based non-profit that provides a multi-lingual 24-hour call center, emergency shelter, transitional housing program, counseling services and community outreach programs that focus on the needs of victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.

CPAF finished in the top 100 out of a half million eligible groups in the first round of the Chase Community Giving contest on Facebook. As a result, they received $25,000 and a chance to compete for a grand prize of $1 million or one of five runner-up awards of $100,000 in the final round of voting from January 15-22. The winners will be announced on January 23. Please join us in the effort to spread the word and get out the vote to help CPAF win so they may continue to better serve the community.

Any and all proceeds earned will be used by CPAF to reach beyond the API community to unify all 24-hour call centers in Los Angeles County. The badly needed funding will be used to create a sustainable joint hotline for 20 domestic violence shelters and 6 rape crisis centers. Additionally, CPAF will extend the hotline services to include online chat to make services more accessible to victims.

Every 15 seconds a woman is beaten in the U.S.
Every two minutes someone in the U.S. is raped or sexually assaulted.
One in three women will be abused in her lifetime.
It happens too often… the silence is deafening.

If a woman has the courage to call, we must make sure there will be someone there to listen.

Michelle doesn’t need a donor.

She needs PRAYER. http://projectmichelle.com/blog/

Last year, my friends contacted me about their friend Michelle Maykin who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (a cancer of the blood). After seeking a bone marrow donor amongst her family, she needed to find a match from a stranger. Tricky thing is that there was and is a lack of Asian bone marrow donors out there. So her friends and family started ProjectMichelle.com in hopes of finding a bone marrow donor for Michelle. A donor was not found, so she went with another option: double cord transplant. Things seemed to be going ok post-transplant, but the cancer came back. After that, she decided to keep fighting and started undergoing chemo again this month. However, according to her doctor, the cancer is now chemo-resistant and she only has 4-6 weeks to live… That must be the hardest news to hear at the age of 27 (I’m only a year younger than her…-_-). Michelle being the fighter that she’s been has decided to try out Eastern medicine…

I was very sad to read the latest update on Michelle and am more than ever determined to meet her, and no not in the next 4-6 weeks, but when she is healthy and cancer-free!

Michelle needs prayer and I am praying that Jesus will heal her. Jesus can heal all! Yes, He can. Please pray with me.

Bring Laura and Euna Home

A good idea of how last night’s vigil in LA went down:

Praying for peace and calm for the families of Laura and Euna during this time. And praying for the safe return of Laura and Euna in the very near future!

Updated: June 3rd Vigils for Laura Ling and Euna Lee

*Vigil info updated. Links added for official site and petition. Originally posted on May 28, 2009.

I haven’t blogged about this before, but most of you know by now that American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee of Current TV were taken prisoners by North Korea on March 17th and are facing trial on June 4th (June 3rd our time) for “illegally” entering North Korea and “hostile acts.” Speculation says that they are being held as chips in NK’s nuclear game. This is some serious sh*t.

I pray that Laura and Euna are safe from mistreatment, that their hearts and minds stay strong during this time, and that they will be released very soon.

Marrow March Madness

For those of you who have yet to register to be a bone marrow donor, it’s just gotten easier! You can register online. More info from A3M:

In spirit of March Madness, Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches is starting a small campaign called Marrow March Madness in hope to increase the registrant pool through a new method: the online way.

Each year thousands of patients are searching for their one life-saving match. They depend on people like you to register as marrow donors and potentially save their life. HLA typing matches depend heavily on ethnic background so your registration will help someone of your own ethnic community.

Here are just a few stories of patients in search of a donor, patients with successful transplants, and patients that have passed away:
http://www.projectmichelle.com
http://www.teamkrissy.com
http://khanhvo85.blogspot.com/
http://www.savejodie.com
http://www.ericamurray.blogspot.com/

HOW TO REGISTER ONLINE:
1. http://marrow.org/HELP/Join_the_Donor_Registry/Join_Now/join_now.html
2. Enter this promo code when asked: CTFHOPE03 (03 as in zero three)
*Entering the code enables you to waive the HLA typing fee of $52 that they normally charge… registering is FREE!
**Code expires at 11:59pm March 31, 2009
(should you be reading this blog post after that date, just change the end of the code to read 04 which stands for April and so forth)

3. Wait for cheek swab kits to come in mail
4. Swab yourself, mail it back.

Once you’ve registered, you’ll only be contacted should you show up as a match. Otherwise you’ll just remain on the registry in peace until you’re 61, which is when you’ll be automatically removed.

ACTUAL DONATION PROCESS:

Please consider it. You could save a life.
