The Butterfly Circus

Great little short film I saw tonight at the Talent 1 Media Film Festival:

Watch in higher quality here.

I got to talk with Rebekah Weigel (writer and producer) for a little bit after the screening and I was so happy to hear that they’re developing the feature-length version of this. From what they were saying, this film came together with lots of prayer and miracles! Speaking of which… Nick Vujicic (who plays Will, NO CGI) is a living miracle himself. I had actually seen this YouTube video of him a few years ago, so I was pleasantly surprised to see him acting in this short film!

So inspirational. I love love love it.

This trailer gives me chills.

The music, the music! Hans Zimmer! *edit* ZACK HEMSEY!!! And wow, the visuals are pretty crazy. Definitely looking forward to seeing this. Christopher Nolan… Leonardo DiCaprio… and Ken Watanabe’s supposed to be in this, too! Can’t wait.

Note about edit (6/11/10): So after thinking the music in this trailer was composed by Hans Zimmer, I started thinking “OMG, Hans Zimmer is THE MAN”… so I tweeted that I was winding down to some of his music… then I just found out that this whole time I was praising the wrong person. Doh. My composer friends who don’t like Hans will probably have a kick out of this one. I should’ve done my homework first. Zack Hemsey, if you’re reading this… you freakin’ rock.

“Urban Wolf” in Hollywood

So Vincent Sze is visiting LA from Hong Kong to promote his online drama series, “Urban Wolf.” It’s funny, cuz’ I met Vince in a non-industry way, so I didn’t really know what he was all about (he’s an actor), but after hanging out with him the other day, he showed me a few episodes of “Urban Wolf”… and now I’m hooked (I just wanna see what the frick happens… it’s a thriller)! Check out the trailer:

You can watch “Urban Wolf” via Sony Pictures Television on Crackle.com (only available in the U.S., U.K., Australia, and Canada). They’ve been releasing one episode per day through May 27th (11 of 15 episodes have already been released). Each episode is quite short… approx. 4 minutes, so one episode def goes by fast. And because they’re so short, if you watch them consecutively, the pre and post-roll ads and credits can get a bit annoying. But how else are they gonna monetize things like this, right?

Anyway, it’s cool that Vince is in town meeting up with folks over here… maybe we’ll see him in some Hollywood flicks in the future…

Vince says he’ll have a star on the Walk of Fame one day…

It’s his first time in the USA, so I guess he’s excused for being super touristy. Haha!

Tag, You’re It! – Evan Jackson Leong

Because it’s Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, I feel it’s appropriate to start up this series… and well, I actually came up with this idea over a year ago, but never got around to launching it, cuz’ originally, I was going to include a mini interview with these spotlights. However, the first person I wanted to spotlight never got back to me with the list of questions I gave him (*ahem* Evan). Haha. ALL GOOD (we were busy with 1040). So, here’s what I wrote up a year ago:

***Tonight (3/16/09), I had the random inspiration to spotlight one of my friends once a week and share a bit of our history. I thought it’d be cool to call this series, “Tag, You’re It!” since I’ll be tagging the friend I spotlight in the note on Facebook.

For my first spotlight, it is appropriate that it’s Evan Jackson Leong as he was my first connection to the Asian American independent filmmaking scene. It all started with the grassroots movement behind Better Luck Tomorrow in 2003 when Evan came to my college campus to promote the film with his behind-the-scenes documentary, “BLT: Genesis.”

In late 2004, Evan encouraged me to apply for Visual Communications‘ Armed With a Camera Fellowship. I got into the program and it is partly because of this, that I took time off from UCSC to be in LA and it was during this time that I was certain I’d end up pursuing a career in LA.

In the next few years, I worked on a handful of projects directed by Evan. From set dressing his music video for FM’s “Round Round” to being an extra in a handful of other music videos to more recently, collaborating on “Kim Jong Il Eharmony” and “Girls on the Dance Floor ft. Kim Jong Il.”

Evan is one of the dopest, most talented, young filmmakers I know. His crew, Arowana Films, is probably the most “MacGyver” peeps out there. I’m talking about this crazy house they live in with a bunch of homemade production gear and a homemade entertainment system!***

Anyway, it’s now been over a year since I wrote all the above and a lot of things have happened. Since then, we’ve worked on a feature-length documentary together, 1040, as well as some other random web projects like “Manivore.” I’m sure there will be more collabs in the future, but literally the day after I came back to LA from my 3-month long Asia trip, Evan took off for the other coast. So, I’m excited for him and what’s in store for him over there ;]

Here’s something he put together recently which I think is dope:

Official Bio:
Evan Jackson Leong is a 6th generation Chinese American native of San Francisco, California. He graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a Bachelor’s Degree in Asian American studies. As a short form filmmaker he has directed numerous music videos, commercials, shorts that have played on MTV in the domestic and international markets. As a long form documentary filmmaker, he has directed two half hour nationally broadcast projects: Him Mark Lai: The People’s Historian and Forging a Feature: The Journey of Better Luck Tomorrow. In his growth as a young filmmaker he has been mentored by Justin Lin, with credits in Better Luck Tomorrow, Fast & Furious and Finishing the Game as a co-producer. He currently completed his first feature length documentary, 1040, which explores the happenings of Christianity in Asia.

What Happens When We Don’t Sleep…

So Arden and I were cleaning the house for five hours today after she came home from a night shoot. I went to sleep at 6:30a, so I didn’t get very much sleep. You can prob guess that the both of us were quite delirious. Anyway, it was actually a really good time… just deep cleaning and listening to/singing along to worship music. After all the cleaning, we were hungry, so we ordered some food. We also made 3 vlogs while we were at it…

Quite a productive day… or not. Haha. We don’t even really know what we’re doing with this YouTube channel… just being random.

Cinema Musica 2010 was a success!

The crowd pleaser of the night was Sour’s “Hibi No Neiro (Tone of Everyday)” directed by Masashi Kawamura, Hal Kirkland, Magico Nakamura, and Masayoshi Nakamura (mucho thanks to Anderson Le for hooking this one up!):

Kina Grannis’ “Valentine” directed by Ross Ching, Far East Movement’s “I Party” directed by Choz Belen, and Taiyo Na’s “Immigrant Mother” directed by Gary San Angel were also very well-received by the audience. All in all, everyone I spoke to said that they really enjoyed the program and that every single video, even the ones lower in production quality, stood strong in concept.

A highlight of the night for me was when Gene Cajayon came up to me after the program and thanked me for putting it together. He told me that he’d been thinking of quitting filmmaking, but my program inspired and encouraged him! I was actually really encouraged by his words and by others’ feedback throughout the night, cuz’ to be honest, I had been thinking this might be my last year curating the program after last year’s not-so-strong program. Btw, Gene directed THE DEBUT, which I’ve actually owned on DVD since college, so it was very cool to meet him!

Anyway, I’m so glad people liked the music vids this year! For those who missed the screening, you can watch all the videos online here:

Finally, thanks again to all who came out last night! Mucho thanks to all the filmmakers and artists who were in attendance. And of course, to LAAPFF/Visual Communications for giving me the opportunity to curate this program, to Toyota for sponsoring, and to the Downtown Independent for hosting us!

Artichoke & Peachies

Um. I don’t know what to say about this… except that Arden and I were just really bored. Since we’re both unemployed and live together, maybe you’ll be seeing more of these…

Any suggestions on what to talk about?

Jeannie Mai x 1040

Gosh, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Jeannie Mai. I recently got to meet up w/ her in Thailand, but I’ll save that for another blog :] For now, here’s a vid from when Jeannie first put her prayer box up on Runyon Canyon:

Something I’m looking forward to when I get back to LA is to be able to hike again! So lacking that over here in Asia… and because of the rain in Taipei… I feel very lazy. Haha >_<

From our last hike together before I left for Asia. Jeannie and Eliot are crazy… they’re wearing weight vests…
